Box Manufacturing: How Custom Boxes Are Made
Custom box manufacturing explained: from chipboard and wrapping to printing, finishing, sampling and production. How to get boxes made for your brand.
Box manufacturing turns a flat sheet of board into a structured, branded package. If you’re sourcing custom boxes for the first time, knowing how they’re made helps you brief a manufacturer clearly and avoid surprises on quality, price and lead time.
1. Structure: the board
Every box starts with the board. Rigid (set-up) boxes are built on thick chipboard (1.5–3 mm) that holds its shape; cardboard and corrugated boxes use thinner or fluted stock for lighter, shippable packaging. The board choice sets the box’s strength and feel.
2. The wrap or print
How the surface is finished defines the look:
- Cloth-wrapped: book cloth hand-wrapped over the board — premium, tactile.
- Litho/coated-paper wrapped: full-colour photographic print on a rigid frame.
- Direct print: for cardboard and corrugated boxes.
3. Finishing
This is where a box stops looking generic: foil stamping, embossing/debossing, spot UV, matte or gloss lamination, and a magnetic-closure lid. See our guide to box finishes.
4. Inserts and assembly
Die-cut EVA foam, satin-lined trays or chipboard dividers hold the product in place. Pieces are assembled — by hand for rigid boxes, by machine for high-volume cartons.
5. Sampling before production
A reputable manufacturer makes a physical sample for your approval before any volume run, so you confirm size, material, colour and print first. This single step prevents costly mistakes.
6. Production, QC and shipping
Approved specs go into production with quality control at each stage, then packing and dispatch. Lead time depends on quantity and finishing.
